We regularly test the most promising laptops, from sleek ultrabooks to cheap Chromebooks to massive gaming laptops and beyond. Here are the best models you can buy in every category, along with advice on how to choose which type of laptop is right for you.
Where they fall short: Great ultrabooks can cost more than many people want to spend on a laptop, even if these models provide a better experience and last longer than cheaper alternatives. Ultrabooks also lack the processing power to play high-end games or handle demanding tasks such as professional video editing or 3D modeling. If you need a cheaper laptop or a more powerful one, check out our other picks below.
Where they fall short: Laptops with color-accurate screens and enough power for creative professionals are expensive, and even more so with add-ons like extra storage and memory. Editing laptops also tend to be larger and heavier than ultrabooks, with most weighing more than 4 pounds. The powerful processors in editing laptops generate lots of heat, as well, so some can get too hot to use comfortably on your lap, though our top pick stayed cool even under the heaviest workloads. In addition, the MacBook Pro is impossible to service on your own, but Apple provides excellent support.
Why we like this one: Made with visual professionals in mind, the Dell XPS 15 9520 is a well-built laptop that offers a beautiful OLED display and serious computing power. It also has a comfortable keyboard and a notably large trackpad, both of which make working on the laptop more enjoyable and less cramped. Its port selection is fairly simple, consisting of two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a non-Thunderbolt USB-C port, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack.

A couple months ago, I purchased a GF63 Thin as it was budget friendly and portable. Needless to say I fell in love with it, for a casual gamer/ college student that doesn't need top of the line graphics, it's a pretty good investment. Fast forward 4 months and the laptop crashed on me while under some pretty intense load for it's tier. After the crash the laptop screen wouldn't turn on, however it does output to a monitor. I thought it would be a bright idea to return to establishment I purchased the laptop from (Best Buy) and use their limited warranty in order to get it fixed and boy was that a nightmare. I was quoted a 2 week repair frame and my laptop was sent over to one of their service centers, in my mind I'm thinking it's in the hands of professionals, but I guess not. I never received any form of updates not through email or my phone, I always would find out by checking the status online or calling. For the first 2 weeks, It was stuck waiting on parts. Of course out of curiosity, I called to see what they were replacing... and it was the lcd screen and hdmi port. Already this made me question why are they even replacing those if no damage was done to any of those parts and I literally wrote a statement telling them how the laptop got into this state. It took them 2 weeks to get and replace the parts, just to go and order another part being the lcd connectors (Why? I don't know) after they realize that's not the issue. 2 more weeks go by and at this point it's been more than a month since they RECIEVED my laptop, and I've come to notice that they did not know what they were doing at all. I contacted Geek Squad to request my laptop be returned unfixed, the agent on the phone claimed to set up an appointment in 2 days time with the store I dropped it off and said it would be there. That was an obvious lie, I didn't even bother going to that appointment, and it's a good thing I didn't because whoever the Tech that was assigned my laptop was adamant about replacing the next part, because they didn't even bother wrapping up the "repair". I let a couple more days go by just to watch them place another order for parts and call again to cancel the repair, thankfully this time the technician obliged and sent my laptop back to Best Buy. Once I had it in hand, I realized I got the laptop back with more damages than I sent it with. The hinge covering between the screen and keyboard wouldn't fully secure onto the frame, The whole back fan area had a missive f***ing hole that I could literally touch my motherboard through, and one of the screw holes was literally ripped off to the point that I could see the thermal block. I wish I could provide pictures but I already sent the laptop over to MSI hoping that they stay true to their warranty being part specific as Best buy definitely ruined the warranty for the frame of the laptop and most likely the screen too, but sure enough MSI came through. They received and processed the laptop last week 1/12 and I should be getting my repaired (at least screen output) unit back tomorrow at 1/20. It took MSI a week to fix it, while it took Best Buy more than a month just playing around with my laptop. I'm just posting this for anyone considering letting Best Buy repair their notebook, to know the bullsh*t of an experience that will be.

"Alder Lake" CPUs with Performance and Efficient cores. An OLED panel with near-4K resolution. All-day battery life. Brute-force processing power, paired with very good battery life. No laptop is perfect, but the 2022 Dell XPS 15 OLED gets most of the wish-list items right for a general-use desktop-replacement laptop for power users. No, it's not a gaming machine, nor is it meant to be (though the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti in our test unit is no slouch for 1080p gaming in a pinch). But this big, authoritative classic is an ace at content creation tasks, and it looks great in silver or white.
If you work in a professional field that doesn't require 100% representation of the DCI-P3 color gamut, then this is the mobile workstation for you. The Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 1 is also ideal for workers that frequently use their laptop keyboard, as it has one of the best in the business. Finally, if you or your organization crave the reliability and build quality of an international brand like Lenovo, then this workstation should be your first and last stop.
Increasing your budget to around $1,000 will unlock access to nearly all of the cutting-edge features modern laptops offer. These include slim, sturdy aluminum chassis, brilliant touch-enabled 4K displays, powerful processors and graphics chips, and batteries that will last all day and well into the night.
Serious gamers might want to opt for a machine with a Killer Networks setup. It will allow for more granular control over giving wired or wireless gaming traffic priority on your internet connection. Business users and gamers may also want a dedicated Ethernet jack. Most gaming machines will have one, and some gamers insist wired Ethernet is still the only way to go for competitive online gaming. Some laptops implement Ethernet as a full-size or fold-out jack; others may come with an adapter in the box that routes Ethernet through a USB port. And still others come with neither, leaving wired Ethernet up to you to add via a dongle if you want it.
Could be the cord itself is the problem. I've seen cords that only provide power when they're bent in the right position, probably from a break of the wires inside, but still stays touching enough sometimes. Especially if the laptop and the plug part of the wire plugged into the laptop stay completely still.
Or maybe some part of the computer board around the jack is bad, or other computer board part. On a related note, I'll bet that most repair shops would charge enough trying and repair your old laptop that it would only cost "a little more" to buy a new laptop; that seems to be a common motivation to buy a new laptop.
If there are no visible damages to the tip of your charger, then the problem most likely is a bad power jack in your laptop. The best thing to do would be to take the laptop to a repair shop and get the jack replaced, if you are able to. Please tell me the model of your laptop and I can provide you with a link to eBay to purchase the jack. Hope this helps! 041b061a72
